The final workshop of the Project “Global Baroque: Transcultural and Transhistorical Approaches to Latin America", funded by the Getty Foundation’s initiative “Connecting Art Histories” is a collaboration of the Universidade Federal de São Paulo, University of Zurich and the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero. It intends to discuss specific case studies in different “contact zones” in the southern part of South America. It will be important not to understand the research results as isolated debates on style, iconography, material, circulations, or simple transfer, but to analyse these transcultural phenomena as complex negotiations of cultural systems. Images and art played a fundamental role in the creation of cultural, religious and political meaning. Therefore, theoretical and methodological questions must be addressed as to understand the different forms of such kinds of cultural productions and their appropriations in Latin America. The workshop will discuss these theoretical and methodological challenges posed by a transcultural and transhistorical baroque. Several traditions – not only in art history – distinguish strictly between the Spanish and the Portuguese colonies, and between the baroque and the neo-baroque. In this way, the actual narrations follow and support a colonial discourse. The workshop will ask for theoretically based categories for comparisons between these contact zones. The final workshop should discuss the theoretical and methodological challenges posed by a global baroque that is understood as transcultural and transhistorical.

The panels are:

1. Transfer and circulation

2. Materiality

3. Media and communication

4. Reappropriation in modernity and post-modernity

The format intends to circulate the texts before the event

within the participants to have more time for discussion.
